Cruise Vacations - Selecting a Travel Agent

Personally, I prefer booking my cruise vacations through a travel agent rather than booking through an internet company. Cruise vacation packages are unique and require more attention to detail than a normal land vacation package. There are many additional rules and restrictions when it comes to cruising and the best way to learn how to book the best discounted cruise package is through your local cruise agent.

Choosing a cruise agent is not a simple task and should be done with due diligence. A good cruise agent has been on at least a dozen cruises and has been on more than one cruise line. They will be able to answer all of your questions about multiple cruise lines and will not look down on your for asking “silly” questions.

The benefit of going through a cruise agent is that it’s like having two people working for you. You can search for the best deals and a cruise agent will also help you search for the most affordable option as well. However, they will have more up to date information right at their finger tips as they work directly with the cruise lines when booking packages. If you search for internet packages, you might not get up to date information and will have to book a package that is not at its market value.

Qualified agents have personally been on many cruises and can tell you about their experience within the industry. They will be able to offer you services that other agents cannot provide and will be able to offer information about cruise lines that they work on a regular basis with. Also, make sure that each agent has an Accreditation or a Mater Cruise Counselor designation from the Cruise Line Industry Association.

Many times the best cruise agents can be found through word of mouth. Have your family members or friends been on a cruise and have had great luck when going on their all inclusive Caribbean cruises? Ask around to see whether anyone has an agent that they usually go through. Your dealings with each agent should be open and relaxed. They shouldn’t try to push you to book a package that you are uncertain about. If an agent does try to push you to buy a specific package, this means that they might be getting a higher commission from the specific cruise line and will have an incentive to push this cruise on you. If that’s the case, do not budge, and put your foot down when selecting your cruise. Remember, it’s your vacation and if you do not agree with the travel agent, you can always go to another one that is more qualified and won’t bully you into buying something.

A good agent will do everything in their power to get you the best deal or get you the accommodations that you want. These people work on commissions and want you to return to them for another cruise. Be specific about how much money you want to spend and put your foot down if you the package that they offer is over your budget. You will have to do your research before going into a cruise agent’s office. If you don’t, it’s like going to buy a car without doing any research about the car or the price of the car.

Another perk of going through an agent is that they can try to service special requests. Do you have an anniversary or are you planning on proposing to someone on your cruise? Agents can help you get your request to the cruise line. Internet companies will not provide this type of service. Once you select the best cruise agent, you will never want to let them go. These people could possibly save you hundreds to thousands of dollars on your next cruise vacations.
